Valerie Bertinelli opened up about her relationship with Eddie Van Halen.
She chatted about it in a video she put up on her Instagram. She mentioned watching her son Wolfgang Van Halen’s episode of ‘Behind the Music,’ and talked about the toxicity in her marriage to Eddie. She explained:
“I fell in love with him when I was 20, and it rapidly declined into drugs, and alcohol, and infidelity. Nothing that makes you feel loved and wanted and cared for. Nothing that would scream soulmate, that’s for sure.”
She also mentioned the two were not soulmates:
“But after Ed died, I was more than willing to put myself in the grieving widow category for a man that I hadn’t lived with for 20 years. What we had together was this beautiful son that we both unconditionally loved. That’s what I got out of that marriage was Wolfie, the best thing that ever happened to me. Not a soulmate.”
Bertinelli and Eddie first crossed paths backstage at a Van Halen gig back in 1980, and tied the knot just a year later.
In ’91, they welcomed their only child together, Wolfgang. Even though everything looked great from the outside, addiction, and cheating messed their marriage up. They called it quits in 2001 and divorced in 2007. However, their split didn’t cause the two to have bad blood. Instead, they bonded even more over the years.
Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020. A year later, his ex-wife told in an interview:
“We had some very difficult, very challenging times, but we had some beautiful times too.”
