Season 4 of one of Apple TV’s best shows, Ted Lasso, could still happen in the future. It all depends on the alignment of the stars, and a decision by Jason Sudeikis, co-writer, co-creator, and main star of the series. This was confirmed by showrunner Bill Lawrence when he was asked about the possibility of the show’s return and/or potential spin-offs.
Lawrence was interviewed by Collider recently in regards to his new show, Bad Monkey, which will shift toward drama territory and will stream on Apple TV+ in mid-August. The question about Ted Lasso’s return to television was inevitable, as Season 3 left everything open for a return. There were no cliffhangers at all, but it certainly felt like more stories were apt to be told.
In the series finale, we saw Ted (Sudeikis) going back to the States to be with his son and leaving the soccer team in the United Kingdom in the hands of his coaching partners. While every character arc ended satisfactorily, the popularity of the series was high enough for everyone to theorize about Apple and Warner Bros. wanting to return to Ted’s story once more. So far, nothing has happened, and Ted Lasso remains a three-season hilarious sports drama.
When asked about the series’ potential return, Lawrence implied that it only depends on one thing: Jason Sudeikis. Per Lawrence’s comment:
“Groupthink sometimes happens, even without talking to each other, and every actor, actress, writer, producer on that show —and [we didn’t get] together and decide this was the message— we all loved the experience. As fans, we’d all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it.”
Jason Sudeikis is the Most Important Player in Ted Lasso’s Return, and There’s a Good Reason
Lawrence used the opportunity to address Sudeikis’ personal life, and how the show’s overseas production may impact him:
“Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children. It’s a big deal. So, as a fan, if someone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna happen again,’ I’ll go nuts. As a partner, I’m’ down for whatever he wants to do.”
Ted Lasso‘s return to Apple TV+ would be huge. And this doesn’t refer to the character himself. Seasons 2 and 3 heavily expanded on characters that progressively grew and sometimes overshadowed Ted’s story as well. Regardless of the actor’s continued ability to make viewers laugh, and the character’s refreshing attitude that always made everyone smile, the importance of Roy Kent, Rebecca Welton, Keeley Jones, and Coach Beard is tangible. All great, well-written characters that managed to steal plenty of scenes throughout the show’s run.

The reaction to The Bear Season 3 has been far more mixed than the previous two seasons, which might make it the new Ted Lasso, for better or worse.
If Sudeikis returns only to the writer’s room for a spin-off, that would be more than welcome, as his ability to bring the universe of Ted Lasso to life is a big part of the series’ success.
