During a recent appearance on Spout Podcast, Shinedown’s Brent Smith revealed what he finds sexiest in rock music nowadays.
The singer said everyone in the world can’t know Shinedown’s music but technology helps them make their music heard to more people. He also thinks it is hard to catch people’s attention because there is so much music out but Shinedown makes an effort about it:
“What we’ve done over the course of our career and what we’ll continue to do is we’ve never once walked into any session in a studio and when we’re writing music and we’re writing a song, we’ve never walked in and said ‘We’re going to write this song because we think it’s going to make us famous.’ Don’t do it because of that. Go in there and write the song because you have something to say.”
Smith Cares About Authenticity
When the host said it is helpful to connect with the audience, Smith agreed:
“100%. And people are really intelligent and they’re smart. They have a heart and they have a soul. They’re going to know if you’re not being genuine. I think the sexiest thing right now in music is authenticity.”
Shinedown Speaks About Heavy Issues In Their Songs
Last month, in a chat with iHeartRadio, Brent detailed the band’s approach to music, explaining:
“We try to really look at music and songwriting as — it really is about being real and being authentic. We talk about a lot of heavy subject matter in our songs. We’ve been a band for 20 years and we’ve been talking about mental health for the better part of 20 years. That’s being brought out to the forefront more now, which I think is a good thing, for people to be able to talk about their feelings and not keep them inside, ’cause that’s gonna allow you to grow as a person. So, that connection with the audiences — they know that we are not going to walk out there and phone anything in. They’re gonna get absolutely our one hundred percent and beyond.”
The rocker previously went through some mental problems but is in a better place right now. He lost 70 pounds from 2010 to 2012 by exercising and eating better.
