The Beatles’ Paul McCartney gave a thumbs-up to Beyoncé’s version of their song ‘Blackbird.’
Last week, Beyoncé released her newest album ‘Cowboy Carter.’ It’s a 27-track country album that mixes things up in the genre. One of the standout tracks is her take on ‘Blackbird,’ a classic McCartney wrote back in 1969 for The Beatles’ self-titled album.
The rocker took to Instagram to share his thoughts about the song. He said he liked how it kept the civil rights message that inspired him in the first place. He wrote:
“I am so happy with Beyoncé’s version of my song ‘Blackbird’. I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place. I think Beyoncé has done a fab version and would urge anyone who has not heard it yet to check it out. You are going to love it!”
He added:
“I spoke to her on FaceTime and she thanked me for writing it and letting her do it. I told her the pleasure was all mine and I thought she had done a killer version of the song. When I saw the footage on the television in the early 60s of the black girls being turned away from school, I found it shocking and I can’t believe that still in these days there are places where this kind of thing is happening right now. Anything my song and Beyoncé’s fabulous version can do to ease racial tension would be a great thing and makes me very proud.”
McCartney’s Credited For Another Thing In The Album
‘Cowboy Carter’ has been smashing streaming records since its release. Last week, Spotify announced that on the day the album was released, it became the platform’s most-streamed album in a single day of 2024 so far.
McCartney didn’t mention in his post that Beyonce used the original master recording of the guitar-and-foot-tapping backing part that he recorded for the Beatles’ ‘White Album’ in 1968 as the backing track for her new version. This news was reported by Variety earlier this week. Also, McCartney gets a co-producing credit on her new record.
