Shrinking is expanding with its upcoming second season. The Harrison Ford and Jason Segel-led series concluded its first season back in March 2023, and was quickly renewed that same month. Little was known about when we should expect the second season’s premiere, but now that Apple TV+ has revealed that date, we’re happy to learn the dramedy will be back on our screens sooner rather than later. Shrinking‘s second season will kick off on October 16 with two new episodes.
Shrinking follows Jimmy Laird (portrayed by Segel), a therapist grieving the loss of his wife, who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own. Through its ten-episode first season, Shrinking amassed critical acclaim and accolades, including Emmy Award nominations for Segel and Jessica Williams, who stars in the series as Gaby, a fellow therapist working with Jimmy. Along with Segel, Ford, and Williams, Shrinking stars Christa Miller, Ted McGinley, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, and Lukita Maxwell.

Besides acclaim for its talented cast and writing, Shrinking has gained praise for the way it explores recovery, grief and loss. MovieWeb’s Alex Trent writes that “the show resonates with audiences and critics alike” because of its “authenticity in handling grief and loss.”
“With so many cynical shows streaming today, it’s nice to have a show that makes being heart-warming and sincere a focus of the drama. This quality is reflected in the chemistry between its characters working so well. Everything in the show feels natural and unforced,” Trent elaborates. “The jokes are well-timed and executed, and the show relies on something other than undercutting its emotional moments with a joke too often”

What Should We Expect from Shrinking Season 2?
Season 1 concluded with Jimmy delivering a moving speech at Brian (Urie) and Charlie’s (Devin Kawaoka) wedding and Grace (Heidi Gardner), one of Jimmy’s patients, snapping on her abusive husband Donny (Tilky Jones). While no details about plotlines surrounding the sophomore season have been unveiled, we anticipate a wild ride given the Season 1 finale’s cliffhanger. During an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, McGinley discussed the upcoming season:
“Well, so we’re right now [shooting] in the fifth show, and of course, I can’t tell you anything, but [my character] Derek is going to have a little more to do. It’s going to be fun… funny. There are a lot of crazy storylines, and I think it’ll be compelling television. I will say going to work every day is just an absolute pleasure. I can’t wait to go to the set. You don’t get that every day on different shows, even though I’m really good at that. I will always find a reason to enjoy a job and a certain group of people within that space.”
Ted Lasso star, and Emmy Award-winning actor, Brett Goldstein joins Shrinking for its second season (we’re still holding out for more Roy Kent in a fourth season of Ted Lasso). Goldstein co-created Shrinking with Bill Lawrence (the creator of Scrubs and an overall force in comedy television) and Segel. The three executive produce the AppleTV+ series.
Season 2
