In a new interview with Chaoszine, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley discussed the music he makes out of the band, and it seems like he has some plans to make even heavier music.
During the chat, the rocker was asked about his music that doesn’t really fit Sum 41’s style. In response, he said he might think of forming a heavy metal band:
“I find that the heavy side, like the metal stuff, I love writing metal riffs, but they’ve always made it into Sum 41 songs. I don’t know if I would go down and create a heavy metal band or something like that. Who knows? That’s the exciting part is that I don’t know anything. I feel like the day Sum 41 tour ends, and maybe a couple weeks after that, I’ll wake up and go, ‘Holy sh*t, I don’t have anything. I gotta figure something out.’ That’s what I’ll know, what do I really want to do?”
How Whibley Decided To End It All?
For the past five years, Deryck Whibley had the feeling to leave Sum 41, but he didn’t want to seem ‘ungrateful.’
Whibley loved making music for a living. So, he stuck with them and worked on their latest album, ‘Heaven :x: Hell.’ Well, it wasn’t until they finished the album that Whibley made up his mind. In an earlier interview, the rocker explained how it all came together that he wanted the album to be his last work:
“I sat back and I listened to it, and I thought, ‘This to me feels like the work is complete now.’ This double record — one side pop-punk, one side heavier — from beginning to end, it encapsulates everything musically we’ve tried to do over the years.”
But Whibley didn’t rush to tell his bandmates about his decision. He took almost a year to let them know and sent an email to explain how he felt and give them time to think it over without any pressure to reply right away. When they finally talked about it on the phone, it was a supportive conversation among all five of them.
The band dropped their last album ‘Heaven :x: Hell’ and said goodbye to their career as Sum 41.
