In a new interview with Nik Nocturnal, Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack shared his thoughts on being called screamo.
Over the years, Black Veil Brides have been called a ‘screamo band.’ During the recent chat, the frontman clarified that they are not and said it’s a ‘small-minded insult’ instead:
“I could give a shit about any of it. You have to understand I’m not a good person to talk to about that because I have been what you might call hated. My band has been not beloved by many. I’m glad that my personality could be better than how many of you feel about my music. But I will say that the term screamo is to me the same thing as any number of sort of small-minded insults that were thrown. So the fact that those terms have morphed into terms of endearment, I find positive.”
He also added that if the band would get upset over terms like these, they would have ended it years ago.
Biersack Embraces Past Decisions
In addition to being called screamo, the band received criticism for not being ‘real metal.’ Although the criticism slowed down when Biersack went solo, BVB still receives hate today.
In a separate interview, the rocker was asked if any of his past decisions would be open to criticism. But as it turns out, he embraces his past decisions rather than hiding and never talking about them. He explained:
“Oh yeah, but I guess I just embrace that kind of stuff. The good thing is, because I was fortunate enough to have any kind of success at that age I was paying attention to my career. I can look back and go, ‘I don’t see how that was going to be beneficial at all…’ but in my mind at the time I was thinking, ‘Oh, this is a cool look for the band that ties into this thing.’ So most of the quote-unquote embarrassing things that existed were tangentially involved with the band in some capacity, so they’re not so much embarrassing, more just a different era or different costume. It’s the George Clooney Batman with the nipples as opposed to the Christian Bale Batman. It’s whatever flavour of the character you want to see.”
