Zooey Deschanel is never giving up her iconic bangs.
At the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Friday, June 7, the 44-year-old New Girl star told PEOPLE that her signature hairstyle is here to stay.
“I look better with them,” the actress, who walked the red carpet with her fiancé Jonathan Scott, shared. “I’ve definitely had periods in my life where I have grown them out. But I just look better with them I think.”
She continued, “So, yeah, I’ll keep them. I’ve had them since I was like two years old.”
Scott, 46, jumped in to share a memory of Deschanel without her bangs and the frenzy it caused.
“When we first started dating, I remember you had taken a picture with no bangs and then there was a scandal online,” he told PEOPLE. “People were like, who is this? Is it Zoeey? I’m like, ‘Oh, I didn’t realize it.'”
“My CIA cover is no bangs,” Deschanel joked.

The actress has gone without bangs several times, but one instance was particularly jarring to fans. At the 2013 Met Gala, Deschanel swapped her trademark bangs for a sleek, side-parted updo to complement her preppy seersucker Tommy Hilfiger dress (a notable departure from the year’s “Punk” theme). Photos of Deschanel at the event circulated online, with many commenting that they hardly recognized her with the bang-less hairstyle.
In 2021, the actress shared a selfie without her bangs, referencing a memes that came out of the 2013 incident.
“Proof I have a forehead,” she jokingly wrote alongside the photo, which showed her with a middle part and no bangs.

“This photo reminded me of this meme…LOL,” Deschanel wrote in the post.
