Season 2 of Shrinking is upon us and Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) fans are wondering about what role he plays in front of the camera on the hit Apple TV+ series. Lips remain sealed about Goldstein’s mysterious recurring character, but Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), who co-created the series with Goldstein and Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso), took time in a recent MovieWeb interview to unpack why it was important to him to bring Goldstein in front of the camera.
“Brett could have participated in the show in any capacity he wanted, but when the character was written, I really couldn’t imagine somebody else playing that part,” Segel said. “I think Brett is an incredible actor and an incredibly sensitive guy and hasn’t had the opportunity yet — he’ll have endless opportunity [in roles] — to show the breadth of what he does.” He added:
“I have some big scenes with this character, and not to give too much away, but
I wanted it to be against somebody who felt like a formidable equal
and that’s what Brett brings to the table.”

Jason Segel admitted he, Lawrence, and Goldstein were careful on how to include Goldstein, because fans revere him as moody Roy Kent on Ted Lasso. “That’s part of what was important for me, too [in casting Goldstein], because I’ve been in a similar situation where, ‘Yeah, but that’s not like Marshall Eriksen from How I Met Your Mother.’ And I went through having to slowly break conceptions to be able to play other kinds of parts. So, I thought, let’s get that out of the way for Brett real fast.”

Shrinking instantly captured attention when it landed on Apple TV+ in 2023, and quickly picked up a second season order. Having Jason Segel at the helm was enough of a draw (people should check out his underrated series Dispatches from Elsewhere), but the fact that Segel co-created the series with Emmy Award winners Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein makes the outing even more inviting.
Season 2 of Shrinking takes unpredictable grieving therapist Jimmy (Segel) and many of its other characters into new territory, fueling a sure-bet Season 3. Some things remain the same. Yes, Jimmy’s unconventional work protocol — actually telling his clients exactly what he thinks — will factor into the new season, but you can expect several significant shifts in nearly all the characters’ interpersonal relationships.

As for how Segel wanted the season to land with viewers, Segel added: “I actually try not to think too much about how people are going to respond to something, and instead just try to really honestly do what I’m supposed to do between ‘action’ and ‘cut.’ I think the cool thing about art is that people get to feel about it however they want. I’m excited about the breadth of responses that there could be.” The first two episodes of Season 2 of Shrinking stream October 16 on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly.
