Yellowstone is preparing to make its long-awaited return to the Paramount Network this weekend in what is expected to be the final time out for the flagship Taylor Sheridan series. However, it has been well documented that the final episodes will at some point have a big hole thanks to the departure of Kevin Costner before filming was completed on the second half of Season 5. That is something that Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in the show, has now addressed in a new interview with People.
Discussing the impact of Costner’s absence on the set, Grimes explained how there came a point when the realization of what it all meant really began to hit home. He said:
“Him not coming back felt like, ‘Okay, we’re going to have to land this plane now for real. I think the patriarch leaving was always going to be part of the story. That’s always where it was headed is like, what do these kids do? What does this family do when their rock is gone? He’s [Kevin Costner] a big presence, man, guy’s an icon. So not having him around to set felt a little different. But as always, I mean, we’re a big family now. It was just as special and hopefully, the fans will be able to connect with the story just as much … I think they will be able to.”
The Yellowstone Franchise Has More to Give – But Maybe Not Season 6
Taylor Sheridan has proven to be the golden goose of Paramount in recent years. Having delivered multiple successes with Yellowstone and its many spin-offs, as well as the Sylvester Stallone-led series Tulsa King, and the Zoe Saldaña drama Lioness, Sheridan still has more Yellowstone offerings up his sleeve. However, it seems that those new shows do not include a direct Season 6 of his greatest achievement, something Grimes kind of went on to confirm.
“It all comes down to Taylor’s vision. He has to see it to be able to write it, and I don’t think he’s going to write something that he doesn’t want to. Basically we’re just going to see if Taylor has an idea that he gets excited about, and that’s going to make all the difference here.”

Did Christina Voros just let the biggest Yellowstone Season 5B spoiler slip?
So, effectively, Yellowstone will end with Season 5b…unless, sometime in the future, Sheridan has a vision that makes it worth returning to this generation of the Duttons. Yet, there have been several suggestions that other shows will be coming along to take the place of the flagship series, including the follow-up show, The Madison. Along with a new season of 1923, the Yellowstone universe will also include two new additions in the form of the prequel series 1944, and the upcoming new loosely connected series, Landman, which stars Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore and is set for release on 16 November on Paramount+.
