In a recent appearance on the WTF with Marc Maron Podcast, Wolfgang Van Halen reflected on his current relationship with David Lee Roth.
When asked if they get along, he replied:
“Not really!”
Then, the rocker referred to DLR’s public attack against him and said:
“Until recently I thought we were on good terms and he made a couple of YouTube videos about me, about how much he doesn’t like me. Which was like ‘Okay, cool.’”
Wolfgang said Roth’s comments don’t matter because people will use them to dislike him:
“He basically just said a bunch of stuff that was true to him. It doesn’t matter if it’s not true because the people that are going to listen to it will believe it and use it to hate me anyway. So you’ve just gotta move forward.”
What Did DLR Say About Wolf?
In a YouTube video called ‘This Crazy Kid..,’ Diamond Dave targeted Wolf in January. Roth claimed that Van Halen had complained about not getting enough attention during their tour. The singer stated:
“This f*cking kid, he’s complaining the entire tour like I’m not paying enough attention to him on stage. Like Santa Claus coming down the chimney and popping out on Christmas with nobody paying attention. Shalom to the dome, homie. I’m giving him the best. Everything I’ve got in front of twenty, thirty thousand people at a clip, and he’s complaining to everybody around me — the business manager, the security guy, the clothing lady — ‘Dave’s not paying enough attention to me.’”
During a show in Jones Beach, New York, things got worse. DLR said Wolfgang had security remove two women Roth had invited, and it made their relationship even tenser:
“Cut to New York City — glamorous, glistening, shimmering New York City, and we’re at Jones Beach with twenty thousand of my closest friends. I walk out into the middle of the stage, and I’m gonna do ‘Ice Cream Man,’ and I’m testifying to the brothers, Eddie [Van Halen] and Al [Alex Van Halen], ‘Man, this is how many times we’ve played New York. This is spectacular.’”
Dave added:
“And what I don’t know is this kid, this schlemiel kid, has commandeered a couple of monkeys to go in back, behind my back, over to the side of the stage and throw out these two great dames that I invited to be my guests to the show. And these dames are in their forties, okay?”
Later, in March, Wolf said he was honored Roth paid so much attention to him. The rocker felt he was now a target in the Van Halen drama since his father wasn’t around anymore.
