Why Sinead O’Connor Could not Stand Roger Waters

The list of rockers who can’t stand Roger Waters has names such as David Gilmour and Disturbed singer David Draiman, but it seemed that the club also had none other than Sinead O’Connor in it as well.

O’Connor had collaborated with Roger before, as she’d taken part in 1991’s ‘The Wall’ production. However, during a chat with Uncut in 2013, it appeared that the singer wasn’t happy about her collaboration, revealing her true feelings when a fan asked what she thought of the Pink Floyd bassist:

“I cannot bear Roger Waters, and I’ll tell you why. Hundreds of thousands of people spent a week’s wages, if not nearly a month’s, for what’s billed as a live show. The day before, they rehearsed all the lights and the explosions and pyrotechnics and all the wankdom you wouldn’t need if you had confidence in the music. They tell us that they’re recording the soundcheck.”

Sinead then revealed how the ‘live’ performance didn’t go the way she would’ve wished:

“So the next day, I go on stage to sing live – and this happened to a number of artists – and my mic is not working. And on comes a playback of yesterday’s recording. So I’m forced to stand there and mime. I don’t like lying to an audience, so as soon as I got offstage, I saw Roger and chased the c*nt to beat the sh*t out of him. He was quite agile, as I remember.”

This wasn’t the first time O’Connor and Waters’ feud had heated up, however, as Waters also criticized the singer while chatting with Q Magazine in 1992 when the host asked his thoughts about the 1991 production:

“It was very, very hard work organizing that ‘Wall’ concert, but everyone was fabulous to work with – Bryan Adams, Van Morrison, Cyndi Lauper, bloody brilliant. All brilliant. Except for Sinead O’Connor. Oh, God! I have never ever met anybody who is so self-involved and unprofessional and big-headed and unpleasant. She is so far up her own bum it’s scary.”

He continued by slamming O’Connor’s public comments regarding the show:

“And then a couple of months after the show, when the record was out, she did an interview on American television, millions of viewers, and she rubbished the whole thing, said ‘the Wall’ concert was a load of w*nk. She doesn’t understand anything. She’s just a silly little girl.”

It isn’t known whether the two rockers ever put their differences aside and resolved their ‘feud,’ but it might be safe to assume that O’Connor and Waters preferred not to interact in the upcoming years as the former singer was still bitter about her gig in 2013.
