Zach Braff has now revealed why the ninth and final season of the hit sitcom Scrubs was so bad. While Scrubs is still considered one of the best sitcoms ever made, the last season was a major disappointment at the time, with many now viewing it as more of a spinoff rather than part of the main show. It was technically titled Scrubs: Med School after all. In an interview for Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast, Braff explained why Season 9 was so lacking, revealing that everyone involved was “exhausted” and had even started to “repeat jokes.”
“By the time nine years were over, we were sort of all exhausted by it. I felt like, at the time, we were starting to repeat jokes. Everyone was pretty fried. … We would do insane hours that people don’t even do anymore.
We didn’t really have much of a life outside of it.”
Scrubs first aired on NBC from 2001 until 2010, with the final seasons featuring a cast of mostly new characters after the series regulars moved on to other things. The main series follows Braff as John “J.D.” Dorian at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital and focuses on the lead character’s unique point of view. Starring Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Neil Flynn, and John C. McGinley before adding the likes of Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, and Dave Franco for the last series, Scrubs was met with critical acclaim, a passionate fanbase, and won two Emmy Awards.
Sadly, the last season is now seen as something of a stain on the Scrubs legacy. And it seems that this reputation has not been lost on Zach Braff and the rest of the cast and crew. Perhaps a revival could heal the wounds left by the lackluster Season 9…
Will We Ever See a Scrubs Revival?
While the final season of Scrubs was seen as a major disappointment by many, fans would no doubt still love to see the show return for a modern revival. Much like Frasier, Sex and the City, and more, Scrubs could be the perfect sitcom to revive, with its unique setting and beloved cast of characters ripe for a modern-day reboot.
But will it ever actually happen? Well, creator Bill Lawrence recently offered a surprisingly promising update on such a project, declaring that he is “definitely” going to do a continuation of Scrubs. Once he works out how…
“You know, I’m really candid about it. We’re definitely going to do it, just because we’ve all been enjoying hanging out. Look, there’s no huge drive because everybody’s successful, and I think the show was on for like, 72 years, but the on the other hand, medical people over here right now are very heroic to me.”
