There were a lot of surprises on Tuesday night’s America’s Got Talent auditions, including some horrible performances, but there were also a few stellar ones, including 14-year-old Reid Wilson, a singer from Alabama, who earned a Golden Buzzer and with it, a pass straight through to the live shows.
The young artist was terribly nervous when he took the stage, but he managed to tell judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara that he has been singing all his life “but the past year, I have been working on it more and singing in front of people more and pursuing it because it is definitely my dream.”
Then he added, “I am definitely nervous, but I am going to put my all into this and sing my heart out and try not to miss a note.”
Simon gave Reid his two minutes to try to make his dream come true on the AGT stage. Reid’s song choice was unusual for a 14-year-old. He chose Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit “You Don’t Own Me,” and when Simon commented that his parents must have good musical taste, Reid said, “no,” getting a laugh from the judges and the audience.

Reid’s vocals turned out to be impressive, causing Simon to comment, “We weren’t expecting that.”
Then it was time for the critiques.
Heidi said, “I think you’re absolutely incredible. I loved when you took the mic off [the stand] and gave a little more stage presence. Well done.”
And Sofia chimed in, “You were so nervous at the beginning. I was, ‘He’s not going to be able to put his stuff together,’ but you did, and you did amazingly. It sounded spectacular from here.”
Then Simon explained that he shut his eyes for a moment just to listen to Reid’s voice and then, “I opened them again and there’s a sweet, young kid.”
