In a recent interview with Kyle Meredith, Mastodon frontman and bassist Troy Sanders discussed the band’s plans for a new album. The band released their latest album ‘Hushed And Grim’ in 2021.
“At this moment, we just wrapped up three years of touring on ‘Hushed And Grim’, so we’re excited to dig into some new music. That’s for damn sure,” the bassist said. “But nothing is written in blood or set in stone. But also nothing is off limits. If someone comes and says, ‘What do you think of this, guys? Just hear me out.’ And if it sounds interesting and unique and potentially fun to pursue, then we’re in.”
He also revealed that the band would never make an album just for the fan’s liking. “We never really think, like, ‘Hey, the last record was long. It was good. It was long and dark and the subject matter was really sad. So we need to do something different.’ Well, we’re gonna do something different anyway. But we’re not gonna do anything just to try to please our fanbase. We’re not gonna do anything to purposely try to appeal to a new fanbase or anything like that. We’ve always just felt confident in whatever we do, people will see through it as authentic, and whether they like it or not, it’s not in our hands anyway.”
Rumors about new Mastodon music have been around for a while now. It’s now very clear that the band is working on a new album, as the drummer Brann Dailor recently revealed in an interview with Rock 100.5 The Katt FM. “New Mastodon, it’s taking shape. There’s lots of new material and lots and lots of new stuff. There might be something new coming out really, really soon. But who knows? Who knows? I don’t know.”
“We’ve been working on new stuff for months. And we need to go home. In between all the other festivals that we’re doing — we’re doing a few different little sprinklings of things — in between that stuff, we need to finish working on… write some actual lyrics would be cool. We’re always a lyrics-last kind of band,” he added.
There aren’t any new tracks released from the album or a release date for the album, but the band collaborated with Lamb Of God to put out a new single, ‘Floods Of Triton.’
