Filming on Tron: Ares has officially concluded following a location shoot in Vancouver for the past few months, according to a social media post by its director. The movie, which stars Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges, is the sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy and sees Leto as Ares, a rogue program within the grid while Bridges reprises his role as Kevin Flynn. The movie also features a star-studded cast, with Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Past Lives‘ breakout Greta Lee joining the pulse-pounding adventure. Yellowjackets star Sarah Desjardins and Shameless‘ Cameron Monaghan are also on board, alongside Hasan Minhaj and Arturo Castro, rounding out an excellent cast.
The movie is directed by Joachim Rønning, who first began to make waves with the 2012 film Kon-Tiki, which received nominations for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. His Hollywood breakthrough came with the 2017 blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He continued to direct big-budget films, including Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 2019.
Rønning took to Instagram to express his gratitude to the crew after what has been a lengthy and exhausting — not to mention frustrating — process, following a number of delays. The director, however, is thrilled that they’ve reached the finish line and confirmed he couldn’t wait to show the world the magic they’ve created inside the Grid.
“That’s a wrap on TRON:ARES. Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.”
What Is ‘Tron’s Legacy?
Both films, but in particular, the original movie, Tron from 1982, are celebrated for their groundbreaking visual effects that set a new standard in the realm of digital filmmaking and have maintained a strong cult following. For those looking to learn more about the grid and jump back into the Tron universe, both movies, along with the impressive animated series Tron: Uprising, which bridges the narrative gap between the two, are available for streaming on Disney+. The series further explores the intricate dynamics of the visually stunning digital world, and the complex politics at play within.
Tron: Ares is expected to be released exclusively in theaters on October 10, 2025. See Rønning’s post above.
