If you’ve been keeping up with your South Korean film and TV in recent years, then you’ll know the work of Yeon Sang-ho. From the Train To Busan zombie horror trilogy, to robot merc sci-fi actioner Jung_E, to hit Netflix series Hellbound (no, not this one) and Parasyte: The Grey, the Seoul-born filmmaker has consistently proven a creative force to be reckoned with. Now, as reported by THR, Sang-ho is set to team up with Oscar-winning Roma director Alfonso Cuarón on new Netflix thriller Revelations, a movie based on his own popular Korean webcomic of the same name.
Cuarón is aboard to executive produce and consult on the project, which will also see Sang-ho reunite with his Hellbound scribe and webcomic collaborator Choi Gyu-seok. ““Alfonso Cuarón, known for masterpieces like Children of Men and Gravity, has greatly influenced my work as a director,” said Sang-ho, sharing his excitement at the prospect of working with Cuarón, whose own next project is Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline Apple TV+ thriller Disclaimer. “I am thrilled at this opportunity to collaborate with him on shaping Revelations, and I have high expectations for our partnership.”
As for what we can expect from Revelations, the plot centres around a missing persons case and follows a pastor and a detective, each differently driven by their own beliefs. When a man named Yang-rae visits pastor Min-chan’s (Ryu Jun-yeol) provincial town church, Min-chan receives a divine revelation identifying him as the culprit who abducted his son, and sets out in the pursuit of justice. As his abiding faith and the cruel truths of reality intersect, Min-chan becomes consumed by his quest for retribution. At the same time, detective Yeon-hee (Shin Hyun-been) — who’s constantly haunted by visions of her sister, who died due to a heinous crime — also finds herself on Yang-rae’s trail.
There’s no word just yet on when we can expect this one to hit Netflix, though we’ll be sure to give you updates as a release date nears. But with Sang-ho and Cuarón at the helm and a complex case to crack wide open, Revelations could be the streamer’s next South Korean, er, revelation.
