If global warming wasn’t scary enough, the new Netflix series, The Eternaut, is adding aliens to the mix. Based on the beloved comic book of the same name by writer Héctor Germán Oesterheld and artist Francisco Solano López, The Eternaut sees a deadly toxic snowfall rain over Buenos Aires, Argentina, instantly killing anyone touched by it. As the dead pile up, strange phenomena happen within the city, leading the survivors to believe there’s something more sinister at play.
The first trailer for The Eternaut shows off the gorgeously decimated landscape and the horrific consequences of touching the snow. Created and directed by Bruno Stagnaro, the six-episode series stars Ricardo Darin, Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, Ariel Staltari, Marcelo Subuitti, Claudio Martínez Bel, Orianna Cárdenas, and Mora Fisz. The official synopsis reads:
“After a devastating toxic snowfall kills millions, Juan Salvo and a group of survivors in Buenos Aires must resist an invisible threat from another world.”
The comic book was published between 1957 and 1959 and became an international phenomenon, winning an Eisner Award. For Stagnaro, The Eternaut has been with him since he was 10 years old, and he’s using his memories as a child reading it for the first time to inform his adaptation. Speaking to Netflix, he explained:
“[The Eternaut] was one of the first things I read in full in my life, when I was 10 years old. My approach to the adaptation will be to be faithful to that child reader who came across the story for the first time, to try to reconstruct the genuine emotion of living an adventure on the corner of your neighborhood, and the construction of that great Argentine hero that is Juan Salvo.”

What’s Been Revealed at Netflix’s Geeked Week?
This year’s Geeked Week (Netflix’s annual celebration of its new original content) has been packed full of massive reveals and surprises. Season 2 of Wednesday, the final season of Cobra Kai, Season 7 of Black Mirror, a new The Witcher animated movie, and Zack Snyder’s first animated series have all been showcased at this year’s event. New trailers were dropped online, release dates were revealed, and Netflix even unveiled some new programming.
Sticking to the sci-fi genre, the streamer recently announced a new Cyberpunk-based spin-off show. The new, untitled series will follow up the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, most likely telling a new story in Night City. When it comes to sci-fi on Netflix, it doesn’t get much bigger than Stranger Things. The streamer recently dropped a new first-look reveal for the upcoming fifth and final season. Or, if you’re looking for a similarly dark and bloody show, the second season of Squid Game is on the way. The new teaser dropped this week, revealing another violent game, where endless wealth is the prize and death is the forfeit. Most surprisingly, the trailer showed that Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) has found his way back into the Squid Game arena for a second event.
The Eternaut
will be released exclusively on Netflix in 2025.
