Tracii Guns recently tweeted about the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris.
The rocker wrote the following after the Christian backlash against the ‘Last Supper’ reference:
“Christians bitch about… EVERYTHING!!! Enjoy your lives. Being offended by everything is a crazy way to live. And don’t support felons. Simple right?”
The 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony had many memorable moments but one part of the ceremony got mixed reactions. The four-hour event began the Summer Games on July 26. Athletes glided down the River Seine.
Not Everyone Liked The Ceremony
One scene showed drag queens and dancers at a long table. Some thought it looked like Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper.’ Some people called this scene a ‘mockery’ and ‘insulting to Christians.’ Others saw it as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and inclusivity.
Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps apologized on July 28, saying:
“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think that [artistic director] Thomas Jolly really tried to celebrate community tolerance. We believe that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we are really sorry.”
French actor Philippe Katerine, painted sparkly blue to look like a Greek god during the opening ceremony, told Le Parisien he was proud of the performance. He said nudity is part of the original Games.
In the opening ceremony, Katerine sang in French, with dancers and drag queens posing along a long table. The table turned into a catwalk, celebrating Paris’ fashion scene. Artistic director Thomas Jolly said he didn’t intend to offend and wanted to include everyone.
