Tori Spelling made headlines earlier this year when she revealed she used a pharmaceutical drug to lose the weight she’d gained during her pregnancy with her fifth child.
The former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star, 51, revealed in an April episode of her podcast that she took the Type 2 diabetes drug Mounjaro, which helped her lose about 40 pounds.
Spelling has opened up about suffering with body image issues in the past, especially postpartum, and how she navigates her health. Spelling has five children — Liam, 17, Stella, 16, Hattie, 13, and Finn, 12, and Beau, 7— with ex Dean McDermott.
Here’s what to know about Tori Spelling’s weight loss journey in her own words.
Spelling took the Type 2 diabetes drug Mounjaro to lose weight
Spelling revealed in April on her podcast that she took the Type 2 diabetes drug Mounjaro to lose the baby weight she gained when she was pregnant with her fifth child. It helped her lose about 40 pounds.
“I did Mounjaro, and everyone admits it now. It’s a different time so I don’t feel shamed saying that,” Spelling said during the episode.
“I’m no longer on it, but I did lose weight and I haven’t been on it since the end of January. … I’m happy with my weight,” she added. “I had hit my ideal weight and I felt like I didn’t want to get any thinner.”
She struggled with her weight after her fifth pregnancy
Spelling, who was 44 when she welcomed Beau in March 2017, said on her podcast that she’d had an easier time losing weight postpartum after her first four children. “I was really fortunate because I don’t work out and I don’t drink water,” Spelling joked.
With Beau, said Spelling, things were different. “At my heaviest, I was probably 120 (pounds) my entire life, and after Beau, I was 160. I couldn’t lose the weight, and the doctor was like, ‘Well, it’s an age thing,'” she said.
Spelling said she tried a number of approaches, such as focusing on eating protein and doing intermittent fasting. Eventually, she was able to get to a weight she was more comfortable with using Mounjaro.
She’s been candid about having body issues as a Hollywood mom
Spelling talked repeatedly about how she suffered with body image issues as a Hollywood mom. She in 2009 that she felt pressured to drop pregnancy weight as fast as she could after welcoming her first two kids, son Liam in 2007 and daughter Stella in 2008.
“I knew as soon as I left the house a week, even two weeks after giving birth, (to daughter Stella), people are going to take pictures and scrutinize,” said Spelling. “Whereas mothers everywhere don’t even think about losing the weight for a year. It was hard to find that balance of what’s acceptable.”
“After I had Liam, the weight didn’t just fly right off. I had to diet and exercise,” she added. “When I had Stella, I remember looking at Jessica Alba (after Alba gave birth) and thinking, ‘Wait a minute, it flew right off her.’ Then I read that she works out six days a week and I’m like, ‘Oh God, no, I can’t do that.’ ”
Spelling shared the same sentiment with in 2009.
“I read the magazines!” said Spelling. “I see all the actresses weeks after they have a baby and they look perfect. So I thought that’s what would happen. But it didn’t.”
Diet and exercise have helped her lose weight
In 2009, the then mother of two told that it “sucks” that she had to exercise to lose the weight she’d gained during her first two pregnancies.
“I’ve been pregnant for 2 and a half years basically. So, it’s kind of all I know is being pregnant and then losing the baby weight,” Spelling said in a video interview with the publication.
Spelling noted that she’d gained around 40 pounds with both son Liam and daughter Stella.
“With Liam, I went on a diet regime, I went on an exercise regime and I did lose the weight, and I was just like, ‘Ugh, this sucks, though, to have to exercise, to have to diet. I never had to do that before,'” she said.
She added that she returned to work soon after welcoming Stella, which also deterred her from wanting to devote time to fitness.
“I started back to work four days after I had Stella. I didn’t have time off,” she said, “To me, spending an hour even away from my kids when I did have downtime, I wasn’t going to spend it in the gym. That just was not an option. I wanted to be with them.”
Spelling added that she was able to take off the weight after McDermott started cooking more healthfully at home and the pair began riding bikes together.
