Tom Hanks isn’t holding back his opinions on movie critics and commentators, as the beloved actor went off on a NSFW rant following his latest box office flop, Here. Reuniting Hanks with his old Forrest Gump co-star, Robin Wright, Here follows multiple generations of the Young family in their home over the span of a century. Despite a strong cast, which also includes Kelly Reilly, Leslie Zemeckis, Paul Bettany, Ophelia Lovibond, and Michelle Dockerty, Here has failed to impress critics and audiences, scoring weak reviews and drastically under-performing at the box office — earning just $5 million in its opening weekend.
During a recent appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Hanks shared his unfiltered thoughts about movie critics swaying the public opinion about movies and, worst of all, those who go back on their original reviews decades later. “The critics weigh in… and that’s always up, down. ‘We hate it.’ ‘We like it.’ This is the worst thing: ‘Oh, hey. Oh, hi Tom. I saw your new movie.’ ‘Oh, did you?’ ‘Yeah, it was cute,'” he began. The actor made a particular point about his performances and movies being called “cute” by members of the press. He joked:
“That’s when you ask the wife,
‘Hey, honey, could you take the revolver out of the glove box and hide it somewhere?’
“
“And that’s when this stuff comes around, where it’s like, this thing that didn’t work back then kind of works now,” Hanks continued. Conan O’Brian brought up That Thing You Do!, which was released in 1996. The movie was panned by several high profile critics at the time, but has since found cult status. The actor used the podcast platform to unleash a vendetta that’s clearly been eating at him for some years now. In uncharacteristically vulgar fashion, the Toy Story star said:
”
Let me tell you something about these c***suckers who write about movies.
Can I say that? Somebody who wrote about it [said], ‘Tom Hanks has to stop hanging around with veterans of TV, because this is just like shot on TV, and it’s not much of anything.’ That same person then wrote about the cult classic That Thing You Do, same exact person.”
Is Tom Hanks Correct About Movie Critics?
Love them or loathe them, for as long as Hollywood has been making movies, people have been sharing their opinions about them… critics just have a much larger platform through which to do so. Tom Hanks isn’t the only actor to call out critics, but his comments are perhaps the most vulgar in recent memory. Of course, even the most talented film critic only has an external, subjective view of a movie. There is always the chance that a critic can be wrong (Space Chimps is a good movie, damn it!), yet their falsely negative or positive reviews can have a massive impact on audiences.

A disappointing Rotten Tomatoes rating reveals the single-frame experiment has gone horribly wrong.
On the flip side, critics being wrong about movies is part of being human and the experience of discovering art. Everyone has at least one film that they hated when they were younger, but have since come to appreciate with time, or vice versa. Again, film critics are just making their mistakes on a larger, more public playing field. Even the lauded Roger Ebert has written some questionable reviews throughout his career, which he later backtracked and apologized for.
