The following article contains spoilers for Under Paris.
Under Paris, the Netflix original movie that shook the streamer’s servers when it premiered back in June of this year, is officially getting a sequel. While the project hasn’t been announced by Netflix, star Bérénice Bejo spilled the beans and said she’s planning to start shooting Under Paris 2 soon. As reported by What’s on Netflix, Bejo spoke to La Tribune, and she revealed Netflix would begin production of the sequel next year:
In September 2025, we will shoot
Under Paris 2
. It will not be a simple sequel. It is another film, very different… but still with a shark.
In Under Paris, a marine biologist and researcher named Sophia Assalas loses her husband and her crew during a botched diving operation where a giant shark goes rogue and massacres the entire team. Sophia is now working in an aquarium in Paris, and an activist offers her the chance to help Lilith, the shark responsible for the attack. Lilith’s beacon shows her trapped in the River Seine, the body of water that runs through the city of Paris. However, Sophia soon realizes that things aren’t exactly what they seem, and they may be dealing with an animal that’s smarter than they thought.
Details about the upcoming sequel are scarce, and Bejo did not provide more information about what the film will be about. However, a few months ago director Xavier Gens did share the direction he would take in case the sequel got a green light. Per Gens’ statement:
“If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged underwater.”

Under Paris Ending, Explained: What Happens to Sophia?
Netflix’s French thriller Under Paris is captivating audiences, here’s exactly what happens at the end of the tense ride.
Gens’ sequel teases matches with the ending of part one. Let’s remember that in the ending of Under Paris, Lilith and a bunch of other marine monsters wreak havoc on the city after munching on some swimmers competing in the Paris Triathlon. In the end, Sophia and fellow survivor, Adil, regain consciousness after the attack and see Paris is now completely underwater. The credits also show that Lilith’s babies are now swimming in major rivers in cities like New York, London and Tokyo. In terms of sequel material, there’s nothing better than the way Under Paris ends.
The Unexpected Success of Under Paris
After arriving at the streamer on June 5, 2024, Under Paris became one of the most-watched films of the year with 84 million views, half of those in the first week. The film remained on the spot in Netflix’s Top 10 for some time and this surely became the single reason why talks about a sequel began very quickly. The movie also gained some big name support when Stephen King offered up his own review of the new movie, helping it to even greater heights.
Under Paris isn’t only one of the most successful non-English language films to ever be produced by Netflix. It was also hailed by some as one of the best shark thrillers in decades, and it even had a few calling it the best shark movie since Steven Spielberg created the first Hollywood blockbuster in 1975 with Jaws. However, audiences were not quite as enthusiastic, giving the film just a 30% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.
