Season 4 of Netflix’s The Witcher has potentially wrapped production, as revealed by Freya Allan in an emotional post on social media. Allan stars as Ciri, the last surviving royal of Cintra who was taken in by Geralt of Rivia (formerly Henry Cavill, now Liam Hemsworth) and trained to be a Witcher. Despite Season 4’s production being hit with some major casting issues, it appears that Netflix has overcome the hump and shooting may have wrapped on the penultimate season of the popular fantasy series.
Allan shared some hand-drawn sketches of her co-stars on Instagram, possibly confirming that the actress has wrapped shooting on Season 4. The drawings showcase her Rats co-stars. At the end of Season 3, Ciri escaped the Frying Pan desert and was taken in by the ragtag group of teenage criminals. “Mistle, Iskra, Giselher, Reef, Kayleigh, Asse. I love you all. Thank you for the most special season of [The Witcher],” Allan wrote.
Season 4 sees Allan return alongside her long-time cast mates, Joey Batey (Jaskier) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer of Vengerberg). Joining the trio for the fourth season is Liam Hemsworth, who is taking over as the eponymous Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, after Henry Cavill departed from the series. Cavill’s exit still remains unexplained, but it is generally believed the actor left the series due to creative differences. Another A-list star is also joining The Witcher for its final two seasons. Laurence Fishburne is venturing to The Continent as Regis, a powerful Higher Vampire, who becomes a trusted member of Geralt’s group as he searches for Ciri. The Witcher Season 4 is expected to be released halfway through 2025.
The Rats Spin-Off Has Been Canceled at Netflix
If Netflix’s The Witcher follows a similar narrative path to the last books in Andrzej Sapkowski’s series, then The Rats will play a major part in Season 4. The group shapes Ciri’s personality, as the young sheltered princess is still learning the ways of the world after her home city was decimated by Nilfgaard. While the gang of misfits will get plenty of screentime in the new season, they were given their own spin-off show…before Netflix pulled the plug.
Netflix’s The Witcher universe has had a tough time with its spin-off shows. The Blood Origins prequel was panned by audiences and critics, and was quickly canceled after a single season. However, The Rats didn’t even get a chance on screen before the streamer shut down production. Full details about The Rats‘ cancelation have yet to be revealed. However, reports have been released suggesting that executives at Netflix axed the series after viewing rough cuts of the first episode.

The Witcher has lost another cast member, and it’s finally time for Netflix to put the dying fantasy franchise down.
The only spin-off property from The Witcher that has had moderate success is in the animated universe. Nightmare of the Wolf was a decent success for the franchise, set decades before the original show, exploring the decimation of Kaer Morhan (the Witcher’s keep) with Geralt’s teacher Vesemir (voiced by Theo James). The next animated spin-off is coming soon. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep will expand upon one of Sapkowski’s short stories, “A Little Sacrifice,” turning it into an animated feature film. Sirens of the Deep streams on Netflix on February 11, 2025.
