You might have heard the theory about the similarity between the Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and The Simpsons’ beer ‘Duff.’ Well, it has been recently debunked by the show’s writer himself.
Jay Kogen recently spoke to TMZ about the claims. He said McKagan didn’t have much influence on Duff Beer’s name, and that it wasn’t that deep. He also explained what the name really meant:
“We named it Duff because it’s a synonym for butt, tushy, booty, and so on. Duff is a beer for people who sat on their fat ass all day.”
McKagan Wholeheartedly Believes It Was Named After Him
The claims about Duff beer have existed for years since it first appeared on The Simpsons. The show’s writers have repeatedly denied McKagan’s story about the beer’s origin, but the bassist constantly claimed that the fictional brand was related to him.
In an interview earlier, McKagan remembered how the cartoon creators reached out to the band’s management:
“So I was Duff, the King of Beers. But this is 1988, 1989 and our management, I remember they called me and said some arthouse-like cartoon wants to use your name as the beer, like a college arthouse cartoon. There weren’t any adult cartoons at this point.”
He added:
“I didn’t know about branding or anything like that, but that show took off. And then they started selling merch and stuff. I never went after him, but I’m like, ‘Hey, motherf*ckers,’ you know?”
Even though his claims continue to surface in numerous interviews, the creators are still trying to convince McKagan.
