Session guitarist Tommy Emanuel sat down with Jay Jay French Connection podcast and talked about his favorite bands and musicians.
Apparently, he struggled to see why everyone was so excited about The Rolling Stones when they first became popular. In the interview, he called the band ‘a bad high school band’:
“When I heard The Rolling Stones, they sounded like a bad high school band to me, I didn’t get it. And they were in and out of tune.”
He explained why he felt that way:
“The singer [Mick Jagger] sounded like he didn’t give a sh*t. And my brother and I were like, ‘What the hell do people see in this crap?’ Because we were used to hearing these polished, beautiful records.”
How He Feels About Rolling Stones Now
Emmanuel wasn’t exactly excited about their sound back when he was young, and it took him a while to appreciate their approach to music. He shared his current opinions about the band in the same interview:
“Of course, I love The Rolling Stones, and I love The Beatles, and I love the mojo that they bring, but it took me a long time to appreciate them because I was ignorant. I knew nothing.”
