As the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to make waves for Prime Video, a third installment of the series is already in the works. Season 2 follows Sauron (Charlie Vickers) and his mission to conquer Middle-earth by creating the Rings of Power, going head-to-head against Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) after the Dark Lord’s betrayal. The latest season has been generally well-received, but some critique its slow nature and believe it has still not reached its full potential. No matter the case, viewers are still flocking to The Rings of Power, and while a third season has not officially received the greenlight, it has been in the works for quite some time.
According to THR, the third season of The Rings of Power has been in development since before new episodes premiered in late August, and Amazon is content with the current ratings the latest season is pulling. After reaching the all-time streaming chart for Prime Video, the creative forces behind The Rings of Power should expect an official greenlight from Amazon sooner rather than later. However, due to the production’s heavy price tag, perhaps the streamer is waiting for the latest season to conclude before committing to another major investment. The first two seasons combined cost around $1 billion to produce, with the latest installment featuring one of the biggest battles ever put on television (taking place over the final three episodes).
The Rings of Power Takes a Step in The Right Direction
The second season of The Rings of Power is slowly working towards an epic climactic battle that will take up half the season. If viewers feel like the first five episodes are slow or lacking in action sequences, they can rejoice, as the payoff is an emotional, heart-pounding war only The Lord of the Rings can pull off. When it comes to pacing, it is fair to say that the first season felt more balanced in a sense. However, The Rings of Power Season 2 attempts to live up to the expectations of an epic fantasy drama, one that is structured like an 8-hour feature film.
As the third act of The Rings of Power nears, the overall plan for the show begins to become even clearer. Since acquiring the rights to the series, Amazon has always planned The Rings of Power to be five seasons long, no more, no less. After hiding himself under the guise of a regular man, Sauron is now manipulating his way into power in Middle-earth, setting up an epic conflict between good and evil that will likely take a mighty alliance between man, elves, and everyone in between to win. The next seasons of The Rings of Power could see major events like the Battle of Dagorlad take place, which was featured in the opening of the first Lord of the Rings film.
