If you grew up in the ’90s, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with the Lisa Frank brand, or you’ve at least seen it around. What was once a household name, Lisa Frank sort of disappeared abruptly without a lot of fanfare. Anybody wondering what happened to the colorful kids’ brand can rest easy knowing a docuseries about it is coming. Amazon Prime Video announced Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, a four-part series that’ll go into the brand’s history.
Per Prime Video, the series includes more than 20 interviews with Lisa Frank fans and journalists to help paint a better picture of what went wrong for the juggernaut:
“Lisa Frank’s signature rainbow-hued brand evokes core memories and nostalgia for generations of students – and yet there was so much more happening behind the scenes,” said Lauren Anderson, head of Brand and Content Innovation, Amazon MGM Studios. “Thanks to Maxine Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and Alysia Russo – the earliest champion of this series – audiences will discover the reality nestled behind the neon.”
Maxine Productions might be familiar to viewers as the producers behind Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The series revisited child stars from Nickelodeon’s heyday in the ’90s and explored numerous allegations regarding producer Dan Sneider’s inappropriate and abusive behavior. Former Drake and Josh star Drake Bell was prominently featured in the series, in which he revealed that he was sexually abused by dialogue coach Brian Peck. Former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schnieder denied all allegations and filed a lawsuit against the producers. Amazon suggests there was much more behind the scenes at Lisa Frank that could lead to similar bombshells in the new doc.
“Like so many of us, I grew up with a deep attachment to Lisa Frank products, relishing the sense of whimsy, magic, and creativity they brought to daily life,” said Mary Robertson, founder and president of Maxine Productions. “I am honored by the opportunity to work with our incredible director Arianna LaPenne, showrunner Lisa Kalikow, Amazon Prime Video, Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction, and my colleagues at Maxine Productions to share this astonishing true story that may forever change the way you think about rainbows and unicorns.”
