The Penguin episode 7 shifts the status quo of Gotham’s criminal underworld in several major ways, including the death of a classic DC Comics villain. After Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) killed several key members of the Maroni family, it forced an unlikely alliance between feuding crime organizations to take revenge on him. Despite the combined forces, Oz still ended up on top by the end of the day, only in the most unexpected way possible. The Penguin episode 7 kills off Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown), but the titular character does not get to do it himself.
This week’s The Penguin features Sal Maroni officially forming an alliance with the newly-founded Gigante family, headed by Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti). At the start of the episode, Sofia kidnaps Oz’s mother and leaves Vic knocked out at the Crown Point apartment. Oz is then forced to turn himself in to Sal, who wants to kill him as soon as possible, but Sofia needs her former personal driver alive. When Oz takes Sal to the underground drug operation, the Penguin is able to catch Sal off guard by recounting the way his wife and son burned alive and how it smelled. An all-out brawl between the groups forms, with Oz taking Sal one-on-one in a fist fight to settle the beef. At some point, Sal actually has the upper hand, but then falls backwards and dies due to a heart attack.
Although Oz claims victory at the end of the fisticuffs, he in fact did not truly get to beat Sal Maroni, who was brilliantly played by Clancy Brown. Sure, now all he has to deal with is Sofia and getting his own mother back, but in true villain fashion, the Penguin does not get the satisfaction he craves from getting rid of his competition. Plus, it’s safe to say that his underground drug operation is no longer on the cards after it blows up in epic fashion at the end of the episode. Oz always finds a way to come out on top, but episode 7 made sure to do it in the most bittersweet way possible.
The Penguin Finale is Nearly Here
The Penguin season finale arrives next Sunday, and it already seems like a doozy. The previous episodes saw Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) operating his own drug operation with the help of Vic (Rhenzy Feliz), but he now finds himself kidnapped by Sofia’s goons. He asks for Vic to find him “an army,” which presumably means he will recruit the gangs he gave the passionate speech to in episode 6. However, will they be willing to help him out even though his drug operation is ruined? That remains to be seen. Oz seems to be able to win no matter the odds, but they are pretty stacked against him this time around.

Colin Farrell’s performance as the Penguin is transformative. But watching him in action does bring to mind another iconic gangster: Tony Soprano.
Although The Penguin episode 8 has a lot to answer, perhaps a second season could continue Oz’s storyline (if he survives the finale, of course). Matt Reeves has already revealed he’s been in talks with HBO on The Penguin Season 2, among other The Batman spinoff shows. It’s already assumed he’ll have a role in The Batman: Part II, but the highly-anticipated sequel arrives in late 2026. Since The Penguin leads directly into the upcoming Batman sequel, audiences would have to wait another two years for a potential Season 2. Hopefully, Oz and other characters from the HBO series can make an appearance in The Batman: Part II.
Created by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin is a crime-drama spin-off television series of 2022’s film The Batman. Set shortly after the events of The Batman, Oz Cobb, A.K.A. the Penguin, begins his rise in the underworld of Gotham City as he contends with the daughter of his late boss, Carmine Falcone, for control of the crime family’s empire.
