The Office star Jenna Fischer reveals a breast cancer diagnosis with a single purpose: to raise awareness of one of the most common forms of the disease during breast cancer awareness month. Fischer gave life to Pam Beesly in the American version of The Office throughout the show’s nine seasons from 2005 to 2013. Pam is known as the receptionist whose responsibility involved having to support Michael Scott (Steve Carell), but she was also Jim Halpert’s romantic counterpart. Even though she went on to make more movies and TV shows, her presence in The Office remains her most popular role.
The actor made the announcement through her Instagram account, where Fischer shared an uplifting caption confirming that, regardless of the diagnosis, she was now cancer-free after going through extensive treatment. The post reads as follows:
“October is breast cancer awareness month. I never thought I’d be making an announcement like this but here we are. Last December, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Triple Positive Breast Cancer. After completing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation I am now cancer free.
I wanted a photo of myself in my patchy pixie looking happy and healthy to go along with this news. A big thank you to Angela Kinsey’s husband Josh Snyder for taking this photo. It’s just one example of the care they showed me during this journey.”
In the slides, Fischer provides more details about the common form of cancer she was diagnosed with. Luckily, she’s able to inject some humor into her post as she remembers Michael’s legendary but questionable comment to Pam in The Office. Michael shared the following with Pam during the episode where Kevin is waiting for test results: “I’m thinking that, next time you’re in the shower, you should check yourself out. You know, give yourself an exam? Those things are like ticking time bags.”
Fischer adds that she’s ready to get rid of the wigs that covered her hairless head. She also implores people to get their annual mammograms and that even though she couldn’t follow Michael’s advice to check herself, her tumor was too small to be diagnosed during a physical exam. She profoundly thanks The Office partner Angela Kinsey (Angela in the show) for her support and her husband Lee Kirk for being by her side at all moments.
Take it from Pam and her Pam Pams. Michael was right. Get ’em checked ladies. And know that should you get a breast cancer diagnosis, there is a village waiting to care for you.
