Just weeks after the release of the female-led Australian version of The Office, the hit sitcom is getting yet another international remake. Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office franchise follows the everyday shenanigans of employees at dead-end corporate companies and their overly-eager bosses. The show debuted in the U.K., but the U.S. version, starring Steve Carell, helped propel the franchise to international acclaim.
Per Variety, La Oficina is the new Mexican interpretation of The Office, which comes courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios. The show will be directed and executive produced by Gary “Gaz” Alazraki, with Marcos Bucay acting as showrunner. The new show follows the Jabones Olimpo (Olimpo Soaps) company, and their regional manager, Jeronimo Ponce III. The official announcement reveals the new show will follow a similar format to its predecessors, reading:
“The office staff will have to grapple with working in a family business where the boss just isn’t cut out to lead.”
Like The Office Australia, the Mexican version of the series will also stream exclusively on Prime Video. However, at the time of writing, it will only be available in Latin America, Brazil, and Spain. More territories will likely be announced closer to release. In a statement, Alazraki expressed his excitement at bringing the new project to life, revealing his long-time fandom for The Office and Ricky Gervais. He said:
“I’ve wanted to adapt The Office since I bought the Ricky Gervais DVDs in 2003. Everything about the humor and the format makes me consider it the bravest comedy I’ve ever seen.”
The Office Is Also Returning to the U.S.
The Office has now been remade in over a dozen international territories to date, and the franchise is expected to have a long shelf life overseas. But, few fans were expecting to see a new version of the show made on home soil (providing you live in the U.S.). Earlier this year, Greg Daniels announced a new spin-off show, set in the same world as the U.S.version of The Office. The new series will star Domnhall Gleeson (Ex Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) as two employees at a Mid-Western local newspaper. The official logline reads:
“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
Alongside Gleeson and Impecciatore, the new show will also star Ramona Young (Never have I Ever), Melvin Gregg (Snowfall), and Chelsea Frei (Poker Face). More cast members are expected to be announced soon as preproduction continues on the new series.

The Office Remake Reviews Reveal if Female-Led Effort Is a Hit or a Dud
How does The Office Australia fare against the award-winning British original and its beloved U.S. counterpart?
While the “reboot” will be set in the same universe, it’s not certain that any of the fan favorite characters from the original U.S. version will appear in the new The Office. Some of the original cast, including John Krasinski and Steve Carell have expressed an interest in returning to work with Greg Daniels again. However, none of them want a potential cameo to feel forced, as the new The Office is set in a completely different part of the country.
