“Creating Motherhood” is a curated package of stories focused on the intersection of family and creativity and how to live an artful life as a parent.

Right now on Mei Kawajiri’s , there’s a picture of two hands, whose eight fingers are all wearing scrunchy socks and loafers. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Kawajiri opened her own salon in Tokyo’s Harajuku district at the astonishingly young age of 23. After she came to New York in 2012, she began making a name for herself in the fashion industry—she’s created sculptural, high-concept nails for brands from Miu Miu to Marc Jacobs to Balenciaga. You can spot her work on members of New York’s club scene and on celebrities like Gigi Hadid.
Nine months ago, Kawajiri gave birth to a little girl, Itsuki. Below, she answers all our questions about how she’s been thinking about life, style, and manicures since she became a mom.
