Alexandre Aja, the director behind the 2019 horror movie hit Crawl, has now revealed details of the highly-anticipated sequel, unofficially titled Crawl 2. The filmmaker says he already has a few sketches and plans in place for the film – not because it has been required from him – but because he hasn’t stopped thinking about Crawl 2 since the first film opened and he got to see it on the big screen for the first time. Now, speaking to Cinemablend, Aja revealed details of the next chapter in this saga of alligators preying on innocent victims during the hurricane season. He’s been working on the sequel in his head ever since the first outing was released, and teases a new location and even a new natural disaster…
“There [are] so many things that I felt could be more developed. I have this thing: when I finish a movie, somehow I keep, in a weird way, keep walking on that movie, even if it’s over. I cannot do anything about it anymore, but I’m still like, ‘Oh, this is a great location for that. No! But the movie’s done!’ But I’m looking for another location.
With Crawl, it’s kind of the same because, unfortunately, storms and hurricanes didn’t stop after the movie was released. And to see all that footage all the time on TV, I keep thinking about all those different setups, all those different options that could make an amazing, suspenseful surviving survival scene for Crawl. So I’m ready to bring all that back to the screen and put my wetsuit back on.”
Aja hasn’t said if he will attempt to repeat the same formula from the first movie, and it’s also currently a mystery if characters from the first movie will return in the sequel. However, one thing we know so far is that Aja will relocate the alligators and the sequel will take place in New York City. It certainly sounds like Aja is eager to bring disaster and monsters to The Big Apple and deliver another horror hit for audiences.
Crawl is One of the Best Creature Features in Years
Crawl follows Haley, a young woman who decides to go against the rules when a hurricane strikes her Florida town. Instead of going to a safe site, Haley enters the eye of the storm to try and find her father, Dave. Dave has gone missing and Haley fears he may be trapped in his own house. Ultimately, she arrives in the middle of the raging storm and finds him badly hurt in the house’s crawl space. When they try to escape, they see that Florida’s signature community of alligators has taken over…and they’re hungry.
Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Crawl was a refreshing take on the monstrous creatures subgenre of horror. A great pair of leads in Barry Pepper and Kaya Scodelario were key to the film’s appeal, as audiences have gotten used to the same formula of helpless victims, and these two are actually pretty smart when trying to figure out how to escape from the hungry creatures. Crawl was taken to new heights of media attention when Quentin Tarantino himself declared it one of his favorite films of 2019. Here’s hoping that the sequel can successfully swim in its wake.
