Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is moving along nicely as they have cast the main villain. The upcoming superhero film looks to be the second feature project in James Gunn’s new DCU, following Superman. Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) will play the lead role of Supergirl, with Cruella and Fright Night director Craig Gillespie at the helm. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be an adaptation of the comic by the same name, written by Tom King in 2021.
Deadline reports that Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has been cast as the lead villain of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Straight from the comics, Schoenaerts will be playing Krem of the Yellow Hills, a man who kills a young girl’s father and is then pursued by Supergirl after the girl hires her (Krem also harms Krypto, to make matters worse). Schoenaerts is best known for his role in the 2012 film Rust and Bone, for which he won a César Award for Most Promising Actor. He has also had roles in The Danish Girl, Red Sparrow, and Netflix’s The Old Guard.
James Gunn’s DCU Takes Shape
The news of Matthias Schoenaerts’ involvement in Supergirl comes just one day after Kyle Chandler was cast as Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns. With Creature Commandos set to debut on Max in December 2024, the unofficial start of the DCU, James Gunn’s plan outlined in January 2023 is taking shape. With the villain settled, the next role that needs to be cast will be that of Ruthye Marye Knoll, essentially the co-lead of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and the young girl whose father was killed by Krem.
Teases for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow might be laid out in Superman, which will open one year before the film. Milly Alcock is rumored to have a cameo, and comic book writer Mark Waid recently confirmed that Krypto will appear in Superman, likely setting up the canine hero’s role in Supergirl. While many assumed either the Batman film titled Brave and the Bold or The Authority would be the first to follow Superman, Gunn has been adamant that DC Studios is prioritizing quality over meeting specific release dates. If a movie is not ready, they don’t rush it. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow being a more direct adaptation of a popular comic than drawing from various ones seems to have given it a leg up as development is moving along at a good pace.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
