Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 is currently in production in Cape Town, South Africa, but that hasn’t stopped them from releasing the first look at Chopper already. The series follows Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and the Straw Hat Pirates on a journey to find the One Piece, the ultimate pirate treasure. The next season will visit Drum Island, the location on the Grand Line where Chopper is from, a beloved member and resident doctor of the Straw Hat pirate crew.
During Netflix’s Geeked Week live event, the streamer unveiled a behind-the-scenes clip from the second season of One Piece that included the main cast participating in a table read. The inside look features Iñaki Godoy channeling his inner Luffy, while also turning the camera near the end to reveal the back of Chopper. The character’s front side is not visible, but the hat and antlers could not belong to anyone else. The clip confirms that Chopper, to the delight of many longtime fans, will be CGI and not a practical effect. He’s getting the Detective Pikachu treatment, which means they should be able to exactly replicate the endearing and adorable character fans fell in love with years ago. Chopper looks perfect already, and his face is not even seen. Check out the teaser below:
One Piece Season 2 Introduces Major New Characters
For those unfamiliar, Chopper is a young reindeer that ate a Zoan-type Human-Human Devil Fruit (food that gives those that eat it powers). He was then mentored by Dr. Hiriluk and Dr. Kureha, who will be played by Mark Harelik and Katey Segal, respectively, before setting out to sea with the Straw Hat crew to find the One Piece. He’s an adorable, fan-favorite member of the squad that is treated like everyone’s little brother, or called “emergency food” whenever Luffy is starving (which is all the time). His introduction is a big part of One Piece Season 2, which will presumably spend a good amount of time on Drum Island, as seen in the concept art from the recently released set tour.
While the voice behind Chopper has not been revealed yet, other important additions will make their live-action debut in One Piece Season 2. The series just added Joe Manganiello as Mr. O aka Crocodile, widely regarded as one of the best villains of the franchise. Lera Abova (Anna) joins the Netflix show as Miss All Sunday aka Nico Robin, a member of the crime syndicate Baroque works. Along with Chopper, expect both characters to not only play major roles in the next two seasons, but also become a recurring part of the overall series (if renewed, of course).
The official cast includes Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, and Vincent Regan as Garp. Joining the second season are Callum Kerr as Smoker, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Rob Colletti as Wapol, Ty Keogh as Dalton, and Sendhil Ramamurthy as Nefertari Cobra, the king of Alabasta. The Baroque Works crew also includes Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, and Jazzard Jaslyn as Miss Valentine.
