The Boys fans will have a lengthy wait to see how the showdown of Billy Butcher and Homelander plays out, with star Karl Urban revealing when Season 5 will hit Prime Video. Like many fans, Urban wants the show to return as soon as possible, but disappointingly, it looks like there will be a two-year wait for the return of The Boys.
Following the Season 4 finale, Urban shared a post on his Instagram account of Butcher holding a crowbar, covered in blood. In the comments on the image, he wrote:
Working with the illustrious Jeffrey Dean Morgan was the best part of my day every day. That’s all @theboystv for now folks. See you in …2 years (wish it was sooner) for the final season on Prime Video
It was announced just before Season 4 debuted that there would only be one more round of The Boys to come from Eric Kripke, and that would end the central story of the franchise. At the time, Kripke wrote:
“Part of it is such a wonky stupid screenwriter thing but three and five are the big magical numbers for writing. Three is movie acts, TV acts are five. Jokes are a runner of three for five. Five just seems like a good round number. It’s enough to tell the story but also bring it to a climax without wearing out its welcome. It’s been hard because I haven’t been able to tell everyone. I was thrilled to finally be able to get the word out there.”
The Boys Has Faltered in Season 4, but Still Delivered Strong Viewership
While Kripke may have worried that The Boys could wear out their welcome if the series continues beyond its fifth season, the viewership of Season 4 has suggested that this is not a likely outcome. Despite the newest episodes of the series receiving the lowest audience scores of the franchise, the series has dominated Prime Video since the debut of its latest season.
For their part, critics have continued to hail The Boys as a success, but audiences seemed to take issue with the political turn of the series, and some are not happy with the show’s less-than-subtle digs at right-leaning political views and Trump-esque political agendas. While Kripke has defended the show against its detractors, it seems that his words were not needed in order for The Boys to continue to be one of Prime Video’s most popular original shows.
