The Boys Season 5 will finally see Soldier Boy and Homelander exploring their father/son relationship in a little more depth, something that Eric Kripke says will form a large part of the final season of the superhero series. While Jensen Ackles’ character only appeared in the final moments of Season 4, held in suspended animation, the promise of what that means for the future is just one of the reasons fans are now wishing away the two years until the final season rolls out.
During a conversation with GamesRadar, Kripke teased where Soldier Boy’s allegiances now lie, following the way Butcher betrayed him in Season 3. Depending on how the family reunion pans out, Butcher may have an even bigger fight on his hands than he originally expected.
“You know, what we realized was we really hadn’t explored the father-son relationship much between Homelander and Soldier Boy. There’s a lot of material there, how Soldier Boy feels about Homelander, how Homelander feels about his dad, and so we really wanted to dig into that relationship.
Soldier Boy is really driven to kill Butcher after Butcher betrayed him in season 3. So he’s just an excellent antagonist, to switch sides and basically, you know, to be with the supes.”
The return of Soldier Boy is one that will be welcomed by fans of the series, not only for the popularity of Ackles’ character and the prospect of a full Supernatural reunion with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and, potentially, Jared Padelecki, but for his upcoming role in the newly announced spin-off prequel, Vought Rising.
Jensen Ackles Will Go Back to Vought’s Origins
During The Boys’ SDCC panel, it was revealed that while the flagship series is coming to an end with Season 5, the franchise is going to be taking a leaf out of The Walking Dead’s book and continuing via its spin-offs. Alongside Gen V, Vought Rising will lead The Boys into its next chapter on Prime Video.
During the reveal, Kripke explained that the idea for the prequel series is not new, and was actually pitched at the same time as Gen V. Sharing a little more detail on the newest offshoot of the franchise, Kripke said during an interview with Variety:
“We’ve actually had this idea in our pocket for a really long time, and in fact, when I went to Amazon, to pitch spinoffs, I came with two spinoffs, Gen V and Vought Rising. And at the time, they said, ‘Let’s start with Gen V, and we’ll see how it goes and then maybe we’ll do Rising.’ It turns out it went OK. I’m just fascinated with the history of how we became who we became. The Boys itself is basically a film noir. It’s like cops and robbers. So to really do it classically with like fedoras and trench coats and salacious stuff, and like L.A. Confidential with superheroes, is just going to be super fun. And Jensen and Aya, they’re superstars. They’re gonna blow the doors off.”

11 Supernatural Actors Were Also on The Boys
Erick Kripke has made two of the most popular shows of the last 20 years, so he loves to put in Supernatural actors on The Boys.
Fans will have a bit of a wait for both the new spin-off and the prequel series, which will not arrive until at least 2026. However, in the meantime, Gen V Season 2 will be released in 2025 to bridge the gap and fill that Boys void.
