The Boys’ Homelander is as far away from what a superhero role model should be, but for actor Antony Starr, Batman is not a great superhero either. While speaking at the Denver 2024 Fan Expo, Starr shared his thoughts on the world of superheroes beyond that of The Boys, naming his favorite movie and taking an unexpected swipe at DC’s legendary alter ego of Bruce Wayne.
While discussing his own childhood heroes, Starr shared a hot take on how his opinions on Batman have changed over the decades. Now he would even go so far as to controversially state that the Dark Knight is not even a superhero. Speaking at the event, Starr said:
“I always liked Batman. Yeah, but then I got older and I went ‘Actually, he’s just a dude.’ He’s just a guy with a butler and money and a few contraptions, but he’s not really, he’s not a superhero. He’s just a guy running around in a bat outfit, like with some fancy toys and a chip on his shoulder about money.”
However, that doesn’t mean that Starr is not looking forward to seeing where Batman goes next in the new DCU. He added that it is “going to be exciting to see what happens with the DC thing with James Gunn.” Of course, that is not the only version of Batman currently out there, as Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe is still a going concern, with The Penguin spin-off series coming soon and The BatmanPart II aiming to arrive in cinemas in 2026.
The Boys’ Antony Starr Reveals His Favorite Superhero Movie
While Starr has thrown a little shade in the direction of DC, he has also revealed that his favorite superhero movie is not one of theirs either. So what is the Homelander actor’s most-loved movie? He explained:
“I love the first Avengers. The very first Avengers movie I thought that was excellent, there’s so many big stars in that franchise but I feel like the way it was spread across the story, the way they shot it and directed it, it was so well-balanced, because, you know, your tendency is to want to cut to Robert Downey Jr. at all times or Mark Ruffalo. They just balanced it really well, I thought it was excellent.”

The Boys Season 4 Finale Leaves Fans Surprised, Frustrated & Excited for Last Series
The season 4 finale of The Boys has left many fans surprised and excited for the fifth and final series.
The Boys is now heading towards a dramatic and possibly apocalyptic conclusion with its fifth season, and for Starr, the show is coming to an end at the right time. Echoing the sentiments of showrunner Eric Kripke, Starr explained that the main thing was to take the series out while it is still on a high, and not let it outstay its welcome.
“I’m very conscious that I want us to go out on a really positive, strong note. I don’t want us to be the show that pushed one season too far and fell flat. On behalf of everyone that works on the show, I think we deserve to go out with our heads up, not feeling like we should have gone earlier or we overstayed our welcome, so to speak. I think it’ll be about the right time, but also it’ll be a hard thing to leave.”
According to a recent post by Karl Urban, who plays Homelander’s nemesis Billy Butcher, The Boys Season 5 will air sometime in 2026.
