Warning: Spoilers to follow for The Boys season 4 finale…
The Boys season 4 concluded with a major status quo shakeup. With most of the Boys either on the run or captured by forces unknown, Homelander was left unopposed following a conspiratorial coup-de-tat. If that were not already shocking enough, a post-credits scene further revealed that Soldier Boy is now in Homelander’s custody, which could spell bad news for the Boys. Now, in a behind-the-scenes video, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has discussed the Soldier Boy twist and confirms that fans will be seeing more of Jensen Ackles in the fifth and final season.
“Soldier Boy is a fan favorite,” Kripke said. “So it made perfect sense that once H.L. has control of the government, he would learn that his father is on ice. And this won’t be the last we see of him.”
With season 5 of the series now revealed to be the show’s last, Soldier Boy’s reappearance was surely inevitable. Even so, the confirmation that the fan-favorite character will be back is a real boon for the finale of The Boys. Soldier Boy was last seen being taken into government custody following a scuffle with the Boys, and although it has been revealed that Homelander is actually Soldier Boy’s son, the former superhero made it clear that he considers his son to be a disappointment, even trying to take him out. So, when season 5 rolls around, will it be the case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”?
What Will Soldier Boy’s Role Be In The Boys Season 5?
Soldier Boy’s ability to take away powers makes him one of the few Supes capable of taking down Homelander, which will surely come in handy during The Boys season 5. Now that Homelander is in control of the government and the Boys are wanted fugitives, the endgame of the series has been set, and every hand is needed on deck. Soldier Boy’s reappearance will likely complicate matters for all parties involved, rather than simplifying them, however.

The Boys Season 4 Finale Scores One of the Highest Ratings of the Entire Series
The Boys Season 4 ended on a high that balances the early negative reviews of the penultimate season.
Though Soldier Boy seems like a natural ally for the Boys, he’s proven himself to be amoral and self-serving. Their last interaction was not a positive one; the Boys ended up turning on Soldier Boy in order to keep Ryan, Soldier Boy’s grandson, safe. As for Homelander, he may be hoping for a positive father/son reunion, but their last interaction involved Soldier Boy proclaiming Homelander a disappointment and trying to kill him.
Unfortunately for Supernatural fans, it’s unlikely that Ackles and former on-screen dad Jeffrey Dean Morgan will reunite, as it was revealed that Morgan’s character is actually a hallucination of Billy Butcher. It also remains unclear whether or not Ackles will have a substantial role in season 5. Although the actor is clearly enthused about the project, he’s currently the lead on another Prime series, Countdown, and is set to reprise his guest role in season 2 of Tracker.
