The Boys is gearing up for a bloody and grotesque finale, and the series has found its first new cast member for the fifth and final season. Each new season of The Boys has introduced several new supes; with some being morally upstanding, but most being despicable people, bringing their own uniquely narcissistic and violent tendencies to The Seven. Despite the divisive reactions to Season 4’s early episodes, the season finale has almost the entire fan base excited for Season 5 to bring the show to an electrifying close. News about Season 5 has been surprisingly quiet since the finale, but the casting news should once again have fans excited as The Boys gets ready to move into production.
Per Entertainment Weekly, Daveed Diggs has joined the cast of The Boys for Season 5. Diggs’ role is being kept tightly under-wraps, and will likely remain a mystery until the show returns to Prime Video — much like Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character in Season 4. Daveed Diggs is a multi-talented actor, writer, and musician. He is perhaps best known for playing the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the hit musical Hamilton. But Diggs is also no stranger to the sci-fi and superhero genres, having recently appeared in Snowpiercer, and voicing several characters in Prime Video’s hit animated series Invincible.
There Is Only One Way The Boys Can End
The Boys has several plot lines to wrap up in its final season. How will the titular group of renegade heroes escape incarceration? Can they finally bring down Vought? Will Starlight (Erin Moriarty) finally get revenge against The Deep (Chace Crawford)? Will A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) redeem himself? Is Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) too far gone, or can he still become a hero? And what does Soldier Boy’s return mean? Showrunner Eric Kripke has all these questions and more to answer in the final season. However, Kripke has previously hinted at how the show will wrap up, saying that it can only go one way.
After four seasons, The Boys has undeniably been building up the brutal showdown between Homelander (Antony Starr) and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban). Fans got a glimpse at what that fight could look like in Season 3, when Butcher enlisted the help of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) to bring down Homelander. However, with Ryan in the mix, Homelander shifted his focus to saving his stepson. During Season 4’s run on Prime Video, Kripke looked ahead to the final season, and hinted at the dramatic showdown between Homelander and Butcher. The showrunner said:
“I will say that the big meta storyline of the series is these two forces of Homelander and Billy Butcher coming toward each other. Like these two meteors, two planets. Whatever the ending is, it has to heavily involve finally bringing that to a head with whatever disruption that entails… This particular story is about Homelander and Butcher crashing into each other.”
Although The Boys will end with its fifth season, the franchise isn’t coming to an end. Alongside the upcoming second season of Gen V, the incredibly popular spin-off, another branching series is currently in the works. Despite some delays, The Boys: Mexico is still being produced by Prime Video. Kripke has also teased that there could be more spin-offs announced in the future.
