David F. Sandberg, the director behind both Shazam! movies and horror film hit Lights Out, just wrapped filming on his newest project titled Until Dawn, an adaptation of the horror video game phenomenon of the same name. The interactive horror drama, developed by Supermassive Games, followed eight friends as they try to survive the night on a remote mountain with a killer. Modeled after a slasher film, Until Dawn uses horror movie conventions with the added anxiety of leaving the decisions up to the player.
After its release in 2015, the game quickly gained a large fan base. Gamers were impressed by the slasher game’s use of its butterfly effect system, with every decision a player makes affecting the outcome of the story, including who lives and who dies. The fate of the characters is in the players’ hands more than ever, escalating the tension and horror of the story and making it a hit game. Though we’re not quite sure how this unique element will transfer over to the live-action adaptation.
With Sandberg’s background in horror, he seems to be a perfect fit for the frightening game’s adaptation. Sandberg is finally ready to bring the popular game’s story of the young adults fighting to survive on Blackwood Mountain to the big screen. Filming for Unitl Dawn wrapped this month, and Sandberg recently took to Instagram to share a celebratory bloody mirror selfie. The gory teaser will surely have fans excited to see how the Lights Out director will handle their beloved game.
Who Will Make It Until Dawn?
Now that the cast and crew have celebrated making it until dawn, all there is to ask is which of the characters will survive the night? The confirmed cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Odessa A’zion, but it is unclear who each actor will be playing. The inclusion of the butterfly effect is also unspecified, but seeing as it’s a staple feature of the game’s plot, it will surely be mentioned in one way or another. Though audiences might have to wait until the film’s release to get any answers.
