Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Acolyte.
If the Star Wars live-action series The Acolyte has excelled at anything, it is the ability to kill off interesting characters too early. Untimely deaths are a bit of a tradition in Star Wars, as Darth Maul, Snoke, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have proven. The first episode of The Acolyte saw Carrie-Anne Moss’ character, Master Indara, killed in the first five minutes, one of many unexpected and seemingly premature deaths. But The Acolyte creator and showrunner Leslye Headland is hopeful, however, that at least two recently-dispatched characters may still have stories to tell.
In episode five of the series, Night, Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) and a squad of Jedi confront The Stranger, who is revealed to be Qimir (Manny Jacinto). The confrontation turns into a slaughter, as Qimir kills Sol’s Jedi, including young Jecki (Dafne Keen) and Yord (Charlie Barnett) in one of the most shocking scenes of the series so far. According to a report from ComicBook.com, Headland says, “It was always the plan to kill them in Episode 5, halfway through the season.” However, she hopes the two can be seen in Star Wars again, in other content.
Headland was asked about the possibility of Jecki and Yord returning somehow. And she admits it is something she would like to see happen…
“Yeah, definitely. Pablo Hidalgo and I have talked about that, and since wrapping up the season, there’s definitely some stuff that I would love to see come to fruition…There was a lot of background done on them both by the actors in the writers’ room. Yord Fandar, I’ve said this before, was a character in a campaign that I played, so there’s a pretty large backstory to him…So it was kind of fun to think about them a lot and then think, ‘Well, because we didn’t spend a lot of time with them, maybe there’s a way we could keep playing around with them somehow.'”
Other The Acolyte characters are already finding a second life in other Star Wars media, including the Wookiee Kelnacca, who is getting his own comic book. The character was well received by viewers, with many dismayed that his screen time was limited, as he too was killed off halfway through the season. Like Kelnacca, Yord and Jecki were interesting characters with potential, and could find a second life in a series like Tales of the Jedi, the animated anthology series currently streaming on Disney+.
Is The Acolyte the Most Divisive Star Wars Project Yet?
Would fans tune in to see a spinoff series with Yord and Jecki? It’s entirely possible, but the current state of Star Wars fandom may not be the most receptive. A long time ago (seemingly), the series The Mandalorian united Star Wars fandom in a way not seen since the original trilogy. However, after several underwhelming film and TV offerings, Lucasfilm is getting heat from fans who feel Star Wars is being “watered down” with inferior content.

Even before it premiered, The Acolyte generated controversy among fans, particularly those who feel Headland is playing fast and loose with the franchise lore. The series currently has an 80% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 14% rating from fans, upset over the direction of the show. Headland’s admission that one of the show’s writers had never seen Star Wars, and her comments about the show’s critics have only motivated more unhappy fans to rate the show as low as possible. As of now, The Acolyte has not yet been renewed for a second season, but fans have since taken to social media to call for Disney+ to #RenewTheAcolyte.
