Sydney Sweeney became a household name thanks to roles in HBO’s Euphoria and hit movies such as Immaculate and Anyone But You. Now the actress is gaining a lot of attention again after shocking her fans with a transformation into boxing icon Christy Martin for an upcoming big screen biopic. Having grown as an actress in the last several years, Sweeney’s new role has the potential to be another stand-out performance, and is a world away from the glamorous roles she has become synonymous with.
The upcoming film will tell the story of Christy Martin’s journey both as a boxer and as a woman battling the personal trauma of an abusive marriage. The successes and hardships of Martin’s life will be explored, and Sweeney could find herself gaining a lot of praise for the role after managing to build herself a strong reputation as a fearless and versatile young star in Hollywood.
Images published by the U.K.’s The Daily Mail revealed Sweeney in character on the set of the new movie, and to say it came as a bit of a shock to those who have spent the last few years watching the star grace the covers of magazines, and couple up as one half of Anyone But You’s “hot” pairing with Glen Powell. Seen without makeup, sporting a bandanna and casual clothes, Sweeney embodies boxer Martin perfectly, but it is a sight that many of her fans on social media were clearly not prepared for. Sydney Sweeney Cannot Wait to Play Another Challenging Role
Having starred in the hit TV show Euphoria, Sweeney knows a little about roles that come with a lot of drama attached to them. However, in the last couple of years, she has dabbled in both horror and comedy, to mostly positive reviews, and now her role as Martin will bring her back down to a more grounded and serious level. As the actress previously told Deadline, it is a role she is ready to take on.
“I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old. I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body. Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.
Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful, and emotional.”
