Styx welcomed their new bassist, Terry Gowan, through a recent Instagram post. The band shared a photo with Gowan, credited to Jason Powell, and wrote:
“The seven band members are committed to thrilling audiences around the world as they begin their second decade with an average of more than 100 shows per year. Styx consists of James ‘JY’ Young, Tommy Shaw, Chuck Panozzo, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman, Will Evankovich and—picking up the baton from Ricky Phillips—taking over on bass is Terry Gowan.”
Terry Gowan joined Styx on stage for the first time during their concert in Wallingford, CT, on March 22, just days after Ricky Phillips announced his departure. The band’s new post also included his thoughts on joining the lineup:
“It is within an honor and somewhere beyond a dream come true to be joining JY, Tommy, Chuck, Will, and my brother Lawrence—and to be reacquainted with decade-long Gowan bandmate Todd—in taking on the mantle as the new bassist of the legendary Styx. Here’s to many years ahead on the Styx adventure!”
Phillips Took A Break From Touring
Ricky Phillips ended his twenty-year stint with Styx with a Facebook post. He mentioned his need to take a break from touring to spend more time with his family. His words about the decision read:
“I’m not retiring, just taking a break. Presently, I have accepted an offer to co-produce a project in a studio close to home. I’ve known since I was a kid that live performance is in my blood, so, in time, I will post any future engagements or commitments. But for right now, Melissa and I will share coffee talk and meals from home… with our critters close by. Of course, I will always cherish the adventurous days recording and touring with Styx. And, I will truly miss the wonderfully-crazy and faithful Styx fans…whose smiling faces I often saw more than my own family. Peace be with you all… and Happy Trails, Ricky.”
The Band Has New Shows On The Horizon
Styx began their tour with the new lineup this week in the Maritimes and Quebec. They are scheduled to play in Summerside, Halifax, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Alma through May 2024.
Johnny Cash, JJ Cale, and Buddy Holly heir Fredericton David Myles will open for all the shows. Styx will later join Foreigner and special guest John Waite for the ‘Renegades & Juke Box Heroes’ co-headlining trek.
