In a recent interview with Mojo, Police drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Sanders talked about the band and the possibility of reuniting with Sting.
When asked about the reunion with their former bandmate, the drummer kept it short and said:
“No. There’s at least a 0000000000000000000000.1 per cent chance of it ever happening.”
Sting Ended The Band But Never Accepted It
During their time together, the Police had a lot of tension behind the scenes, with fights and arguments among the members. Still, they never officially decided to break up. When Howard Stern asked Sting in 2016 if he was the reason the band split, he said:
“We didn’t officially break up.”
In a 2020 interview on the Vintage Rock Pod, Copeland said things got worse as Sting took more control of the band’s music. Meanwhile, Sting said that he felt ‘limited’ by the band, and that’s why he wanted to have something different to work on.
Copeland Assured Sting Police Wouldn’t Make Another Album
The Police had a contract in their hands that suggested they would have to make five albums. After their fifth and final album ‘Synchronicity,’ they disbanded.
In an interview last year, Copeland shared his perspective on why he believes the band disbanded at the right time. Copeland recalled reassuring his bandmate Sting that they wouldn’t be making any more albums while reflecting on the end of their 2007-2008 tour:
“The last few shows, Stingo and I would count, ‘Okay, how many more [shows]? 12? How many more hours, minutes, will we be stuck with each other on stage?’ By that time, I was able to reassure him, ‘Dude, we’re not making an album. I know everyone around us is hoping we [would], but know that you haven’t got songs for The Police… So you don’t need to worry about that. We’re good. We’ve got to play until this show here, and we’re fine. Let’s just enjoy it.’ And he did.”
