The Effect released their cover of Journey’s ‘It Could Have Been You’ with Steve Perry.
The band features Steve Lukather’s son Trev Lukather on guitar, Phil Collins’ son Nic Collins on drums, keyboardist Steve Maggiora of Toto, and vocalist Emmett Stang. While announcing the song, Trev wrote on Instagram:
“Steve and I go way back. Other than my Pop, Steve Perry has been a mentor to me. When he heard the Effect, he called me and expressed how much he really loved what we were doing. It meant the world. On that same call, I started raving about a deep-cut Journey tune, ‘It Could Have Been You.’”
Lukather added, sharing how Perry accepted his offer to perform the song:
“The idea came up about The Effect doing our own version of it. I asked Steve if he would sing on it and he was in. Even though we were done with our album, it was just too good of an idea to pass up. Any chance to work with my dear brotha Steve is one I’ll happily take.”
The Effect Wants To Bring A New Breath To The Rock World
Lukather and Collins teamed up with Stang and Maggiora to work on a track. Perry joined them during drum tracking and added vocals. Lukather mentioned Perry’s excitement and how his vocals brought new life to an old Journey song. In February, Nic reflected on their place in rock music in a chat with BraveWords correspondent Greg Prato:
“I think The Effect brings a unique take to the current rock music scene. I feel rock has been a bit stale recently, and The Effect brings back hooks and accessible songwriting to the genre. In addition, we all like heavy music, so there’s lots of big riffs and moments that are mixed in with the pop sensibility.”
The Effect already released three songs, ‘Unwanted,’ ‘Something Wrong,’ and ‘Toxic Envy.’ They plan to release their debut album in its full in the upcoming months.
