Last month it was announced that the beloved Starz series Heels would be making its Netflix debut on September 15, with the possibility that the show could continue should it prove successful on the streaming platform. Released in 2021, Heels was canceled in 2023 after just two seasons, ending on a cliffhanger that left the future of Jack Spade and the DWL in question. Now, the man behind Spade, Stephen Amell, is addressing the possibility that the wrestling drama could be revived for a Season 3, and what that might look like for the fans.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet today on Vliet’s YouTube channel, Amell said there’s definitely more story to tell when it comes to Heels, and believes that a Season 3 is a very real possibility at this point. Of course, that will depend on the numbers it manages to draw on Netflix, and Amell’s own schedule right now, which has him taking the lead in NBC’s Suits: L.A., a spinoff of the popular legal drama which lasted for nine seasons on the USA Network. As to what Season 3 of Heels might look like? Amell says the plans are to jump forward.
“I think that Season 3 is a possibility, I think that people are going to have to watch it on Netflix. It’s gonna have to line up schedule wise for me, because I now have another job that’s in first position. But, listen, without trying to spoil it, we didn’t want to send my character out quite literally on his back. There was always the idea that we would tell more of a story, and I think there’s more to be told. I think that if we did come back, you might see a little bit of a time jump.”
I don’t know how the deal would work, but I think if a certain number of people watch it, the whole thing becomes undeniable.
It’s not beyond the realm of possibility for Heels to return for Season 3, given Netflix’s track record of breathing new life into other canceled network shows. Perhaps the most famous of them all, Lucifer, was given the ax by Fox after three seasons, with a petition started shortly thereafter by its rabid fanbase that piqued the interest of Netflix. As such, the streamer picked up the series and let it run for a further three seasons, giving it the proper ending it deserved. Designated Survivor and Manifest are other examples of network shows Netflix has also helped save, so there is hope that fans might one day get the closure they need when it comes to Heels.
Stephen Amell Couldn’t Say No to Heels
Having portrayed the role of Oliver Queen on the CW’s Arrow for eight seasons, Heels came along at a time when Amell was adamant about taking a break from television. The superhero drama had taken a lot out of the Canadian, and he just needed to give his body a rest from all the physicality that came with the role. However, as a lifelong wrestling fan who had already dipped his toes into the world of pro wrestling starting in 2015, the part of Jack Spade was just too good to pass up.
“It was really funny because I was finishing up Arrow, and I was very, very specific with my manager. I was like, ‘A) I’m taking a break from television. B) I’m not entering into another six-year contract right away, and C) I don’t want to do anything particularly physical.’
“Then my manager calls me up and says an offer is coming on this one, it’s going to be an excellent offer, here’s the script. I sat down and read the script, and about four pages in I go, ‘Oh motherf*cker, this is obviously a yes.’ It was a yes right away. Five pages into the script I was like, ‘I obviously have to do this.'”
It’s definitely a role that he seemed born to play, but will we get to see Amell don the tights once more? That depends on the fans, who – it seems – have the future of Heels in the palm of their hands. We’ll have more news on a possible Season 3 when it becomes available. In the meantime, check out Heels when it makes its Netflix debut on September 15, and watch Amell’s full interview with Vliet below.
