Squid Game, the Netflix thriller series from South Korea that holds the very valuable top spot of being the streamer’s most-watched series, will premiere Season 2 on December 26. Not many details about the second season have been confirmed, but showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk is promoting the return of the hit show, calling Season 2 “crazy.”
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang appeared at an event in Los Angeles, and it didn’t take long before he had to answer some questions about the upcoming Season 2. It’s been more than three years since Season 1 premiered, and the anticipation is building up, to say the least. The writer/director/producer talks about the pressure of continuing the story after Season 1 was so successful:
“Of course I felt a certain amount of pressure because I knew that there was a huge amount of anticipation out there, and honestly when I was creating Season 1,
I didn’t plan in any detail that there would be a second season
.However, I did have something in mind that if there were to ever be a second season, I had this idea of what story I would tell; I thought it would be the story of Gi-hun turning away from where he was at the end of Season 1 and going back into the games in order to put a stop to the game, noting that throughout Seasons 2 and 3, it’s going to be about that very journey by Gi-hun that you’re going to be following, both physically and emotionally.”
In the series, Lee Jung-jae plays Seong Gi-hun, Player 456, and the sole winner of the mountain of cash after he defeats all the other players. So far, he’s the only character from Season 1 who will return in Season 2. Lee also offered some insight about returning to the Squid Game universe without the rest of the characters:
“For Season 1, so many colleagues and cast mates poured our hearts and souls into it, and then with each round of the games, we had to say goodbye to so many people.
So all of those memories came back very vividly and also within the story — because so many characters had died on that set, it was almost like I was being pulled back to hell. And I think I could truly feel what the director had intended for me and my character, where, the moment I stepped onto the set, I felt like I really wish more people would make it out alive this time.”
The actor also said this about Hwang’s script for Season 2: “I didn’t think that he would write it that fast, I really doubted he could do that. And when I actually read [them] I thought, ‘This is immaculate, there’s absolutely nothing that needs to be changed.’ It was so well-written and I was just in awe of this talent thinking, ‘This man’s a genius.’”
The End of Squid Game Has Already Been Written & Filmed
During the event, Hwang spoke about the ending of the show. He also confirmed that he’s finishing editing duties for the third season, which will premiere sometime in 2025. There’s no official release date yet, so we’re guessing they’re probably waiting for Season 2 to premiere, and for some viewership records to be broken. Fingers crossed.

The games in Squid Game’s Season 1 are all deadly, but they are not equally difficult. Some prove to be quite easy.
Hwang spoke about writing the conclusion of the beloved thriller. While others would have excessively stretched the story, seeking some profit with several seasons and spin-offs, Hwang was firm about finishing the story with Season 3:
“When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of Season 3, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale. I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of
Squid Game
and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that
we don’t need any further stories from here
