Matt Stone and Trey Parker are combining forces with rapper Kendrick Lamar for a musical-comedy feature from Paramount Pictures.
During its presentation Thursday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the studio announced that an original musical from South Park creators Stone and Parker is set to begin shooting this summer and will hit theaters on the Fourth of July in 2025. Lamar and Dave Free serve as producers through their company PGLang, while Stone and Parker produce for Park County.
“I’m excited to announce that we’re going into production this summer on a musical from the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker,” Paramount film chief Brian Robbins told the crowd about the movie that is currently untitled. “This script is one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read, and it’s certain to create some fireworks when it hits theaters on July 4th, 2025.”
The project was first announced back in 2022, with Vernon Chatham working on the script. At the time, the plot was described as centering on a Black man who portrays a slave at a history museum and learns that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his own ancestors.
Stone and Parker are known for creating the Comedy Central animated series South Park, which aired its 26th season last year and spawned a 1999 theatrical feature, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. The pair are also behind the 2004 movie Team America: World Police and co-wrote the Tony-winning Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. Their interest in musicals stretches back to their first project together, the 1993 indie film Cannibal! The Musical.
Lamar is a music star whose accolades include winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music, an Emmy Award and 17 Grammys.
