Saturday Night Live Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che are hosting a live comedy special called Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark. It will be the first live comedy special released by Peacock, featuring two SNL comedians, who are often standouts on the long-running show. The announcement comes after Netflix got into the live comedy business in 2023 with a Chris Rock special, so it appears Peacock is following in its competitor’s footsteps.
New York After Dark is taped at Brooklyn’s The Bell House and will only feature drop-in comics, according to the pair. This means viewers can potentially see some names they recognize along with some local talent they aren’t familiar with. This is set to become Jost’s first comedy special, while Che has already released a pair of shows in the past for Netflix, and he also created the HBO Max series That Damn Michael Che, which ran for two seasons. Both Jost and Che act as writers for SNL and host the wildly popular Weekend Update segment. You can check out the trailer for New York After Dark below.
Peacock is no stranger to live shows, as the streaming service carries every WWE premium live event, including the wildly successful Wrestlemania 40. Depending on how the duo’s comedy show goes, this could end up being just the start of something bigger for the platform.
How to Watch New York After Dark
Viewers don’t have to stay up as late as they usually would to tune into SNL as New York After Dark airs at 9 p.m. ET on September 12 exclusively on Peacock. It doesn’t have a set run time, but viewers can likely expect to tune in for at least an hour for a night of laughs. If you miss it completely, Peacock will most likely have a replay available, as the streamer does for all of its WWE live events. They are typically available shortly after the show ends.
If you’re somebody looking to have a night filled with fun and laughter, Che and Jost’s special looks provide just that. To watch, you’ll need to subscribe to Peacock. The streamer has two options available between Premium and Premium Plus that cost $7.99 and $13.99 respectively. Both tiers get you access to the live events, but the more expensive option drops ads. When Peacock first launched, there was a free tier, but that has since gone away. Peacock doesn’t offer an official free trial, so paying up is the only way to watch this comedy special.
This announcement comes as streaming services are experiencing a downturn. Some analysts believe a shift to live programming, much like what New York After Dark is attempting to be, won’t be enough to save the platforms. The big services are safe for the time being, as it’s tough to envision a world without Netflix. The streaming service giant is also landing the flagship WWE show RAW in January, so the company is in good shape. Nevertheless, all the viewer can do is tune into the content they want to see.
