Sharon Osbourne thinks Tenacious D should apologize and continue performing after the backlash against Kyle Gass.
During a new episode of The Osbournes podcast, Sharon said the following about the band’s decision to cancel their upcoming shows:
“I think that Jack [Blac] should not have canceled. Go do your thing. People love you, too. Go out. Do what you do best. And just like, ‘Hey, we all make mistakes.’ We all say stupid things. I do it every day.”
What Did Gass Said Against Trump?
Last week, Jack Black announced his decision to stop touring because his bandmate Kyle Gass made a controversial comment about the attack on Donald Trump. The incident happened at a recent show in Sydney, Australia, where Gass made a birthday wish on stage, mentioning the attack on Trump:
“Don’t miss Trump next time.”
The joke got cheers and laughter at the show but faced backlash online. Senator Ralph Babet, from the United Australia Party, said Tenacious D should be deported for wishing Trump’s assassination at their Sydney concert. Gass later apologized, saying:
“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anymore. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret and pain I’ve caused.”
Black Doesn’t Want To Tour
Although his bandmate issued an apology, Black said in an Instagram post that he didn’t intend to continue touring with Tenacious D:
“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
Gass was dropped by his talent agent, Michael Greene of Greene Talent, after his joke about Trump. The band had more shows in Australia and was going to New Zealand. The local promoter first said the show was postponed, but Black later canceled the whole tour. Tenacious D was also supposed to start a U.S. tour in October with a sold-out show in Ohio, but now that is unsure.
